I keep meaning to update, but it's been impossible to fit it in. It's hard to believe that a year ago at this time, I had just gotten to Japan ...

Tomorrow I travel again. Despite the fact that my health is marginal (my right ear has had a pain since last night -- nothing I can really do about it) and both my new contacts (grr, they were only supposed to take a week or so, and it's been two and a half!) and my C.C. figure have not arrived yet, I'm going to try not to be so gloomy, since this will be my last entry from the States for a few weeks, and odds are I will not be updating much at all in the UK.

Anyway, other than the earache issue, 2009 has been a pretty fun year so far. On Friday I went with my high school friends to visit a friend at U of I. We had some good girl time: looking for nightlife (um, there wasn't any -- at least, not until we had headed back to my friend's apartment, at which point we could hear noisy people outside; I guess we went out too early ^^;), swapping boy problems/stories (boys are always problems), shopping at the mall *didn't buy anything*, and ... ice skating. I had never ice skated before in my life, and I discovered that I should probably never attempt it again. I can't even roller skate, so when I got out on the ice, it was just one long series of falls. OK, that's not quite true; I did improve enough over the course of the hour or two that we were there that I could move away from the wall (which I clutched most of the time) and "walk" for a few feet. But I didn't get the hang of gliding (and I left with wet jeans from all the falling). Ah well. After ice skating we warmed up at a cafe for a while (even though I like coffee, I got a raspberry Italian soda ♥), then headed home.

Hmm. You know, for whatever reason, I couldn't sleep well that night. The blame probably rests on the loudly ticking clock in the bedroom where I "slept" -- while it was ticking, I couldn't sleep at all, so that finally, at 6 in the morning, I took it off the wall and put it under a pillow ^^; (after that, I was able to sleep for a brief time).

On Saturday night, I watched Wall-E. Pixar has done cute films before, but this one really blew me away; some parts seemed to have more in common with the indie and foreign films I've watched than with what I would expect from a big name animated picture. The creators did a fantastic job of telling large parts of the story without any dialogue ("pure film"), as well as putting through an environmental message without coming off as preachy or cheesy. And that scene where they're "dancing" through space ... ♥ ♥ ♥ It was just so lovely. Seriously, if you haven't seen Wall-E yet, you should (my brother liked it too!).

I also had a surprise waiting for me ... Star Ocean: First Departure. Jen-chan, you shouldn't have! But I'm happy too (and the note and the bag were awesome: "I love you ... manjusang ... I like ... apple"). I won't be playing it on the plane ride (my PSP is uncharged, at Calvin, and I'm afraid of it getting lost or stolen), but I will definitely play it when I get back. MY HEART WOULD BEST FOR YOU YOU'VE FILLED MY LIFE FOR ME XD I'm sorry I wasn't home to accept it properly m(_)m

On Monday I had a dentist appointment (finally I can chew on both sides of my mouth! ... except I think it's starting to hurt again x.x), then Traci came over for the rest of the day. We finished off the first season of Slayers (^_^) and she showed me Radiata Stories, which is an *ahem* interesting game. Seems like a lot of fun ^^ I'm glad I got to see you before I leave, Aya!

Yesterday I packed some, read a bit of my interim textbook (... still way too much to go x.x), and played a bit of Persona 3. Waaah, I want to play more (but it's not allowed). I also ripped some cds for my mp3 player ... and my computer ATE a cd. I put the cd in the tray, pushed it in, and when I opened it (because it wasn't playing), the cd was no longer there o_o It was very unnerving. But, I realized that what had happened was this: the cd didn't snap into the center of the tray as it should have, so when I pushed it in, the cd slid above the tray, and got trapped ON TOP of the cd drive x.x Pretty ridiculous. Luckily, I could manage to get it down by applying pressure to the top of the drive and sliding the cd out. So I guess all's well that ends well.

Today I um ... what have I done today? More packing stuff ... I picked up traveler's checks and had my mom bother Sears about my missing contacts (she had called on Monday to ask and they blew her off; now they've finally said that the contacts haven't come in yet). My h.s. friends rescheduled our fancy dinner party (which was supposed to be before Christmas) tonight, so that's what I'll be doing. It's not exactly convenient, but I want to get rid of the grab bag gift I bought, and they'll understand if I leave early. (I suppose I could use my earache as an excuse, but that would be really cheap, since I'd said I would come, and my ear isn't that bad.)

Anyway ...

I leave here at 7 a.m. tomorrow. I'll be dropping some stuff off at school, then it's to the airport for my parents and me. The flight leaves at 3:45 p.m. Eastern time; from Grand Rapids to Minneapolis, then from there to London. We should arrive very early on January 9, London time. So, please keep me in your prayers ... I'm more comfortable with flying than I used to be, but it's still a bit scary, and I still don't like it ^^; (more for the security and my own inability to do much of anything -- even read -- while in a plane than the scariness).

Waaah, I still can't believe I'm really going! As I mentioned before, I probably won't be posting much/if at all from the UK (it's really a question of how much free time I have and whether the hostel's pay computers are available -- my dear laptop Matsuka will be sitting in a case in my school apartment), but I'll be sure to take lots of pictures and get souvenirs for you guys ^^ And, I have to keep a journal for cross-cultural engagement credit, so I can post up about my experiences from there when I get back home.

So ... I wish you all a wonderful month of January! I'll be enjoying my last weeks as a 21-year-old (I'll be back in the U.S. before I turn 22), visiting cool places, meeting boys with cute accents (yeah, right XD) and buying useless things ^_^ みんなさん、大好きですよ!
